The dream of San Guglielmo began when Grandfather Guglielmo owned a farm close to the current winery and was a founding member of the Brunello di Montalcino wine Consortium back in 1967. In the 1990’s his son Mario, father of the current owner Ilaria, purchased five hectares of land. Mario taught Ilaria about agriculture and winemaking, inspiring her to take over the management of the vineyard in 2002.
San Guglielmo vineyard is located in the heart of Tuscany in the Brunello di Montalcino area and when viewed from above is heart shaped. The hot summers and long, sunny autumn days, along with the rich mineral soil are ideal for producing aromatic, complex wines.
San Guglielmo are committed to environmentally sustainable practices. No chemical herbicides are used. They have installed a solar power system and use recycled cardboard for packaging. High quality fine wines are produced while respecting nature.
Ilaria and her husband, Mike, also organize wine tastings by appointment.
San Guglielmo translated into English is Saint William. Saint William, a legendary figure, distinguished himself as a knight and a healer. He settled in Tuscany and was believed to have healed a young girl from malaria and also to have killed a dragon, freeing the population from terror. Saint William became a symbol of faith, healing and protection. The crest for the San Guglielmo vineyard depicts the dragon that was slayed, the protective mask the knight wore and Tuscan grapes.
